The side seam construction is engineered to help prevent fluid penetration & interior contamination of the mattress. It also reduces the potential for infestation by bed bugs, lice, and other parasites. Construction and Materials:
General
All mattresses shall be manufactured in accordance with the best practice known to the manufacturing industry and shall be clean and free from defects in material and workmanship.
Ticking
The mattress shall be covered in Correct Tick 10-1 extruded vinyl mattress ticking and manufactured by Vintex, Inc. Correct Tick 10-1 provides extended life due to a combination of softer surface vinyl and the extrusion process used to apply the vinyl. The vinyl coating on the fabric will impart the qualities of waterproofness, stain resistance, anti-microbial and anti-fungal.
Laminated vinyl coatings are unacceptable.
The top and bottom sections in the mattress ticking shall be made up of one full width of fabric with no seams. The ticking used for the borders shall contain not more than two seams all around with all ends hemmed, spliced and securely sewn together by machine in such a manner as to leave no break in the uniformity and finish.
Spring Unit
The spring unit is to be all wire, knotted-coil construction and shall consist of transverse rows of coils connected by the use of helicals running at right angles of the long axis of the unit in such a manner as to prevent a free hinge action. All coils shall be of hourglass shape. The spring unit shall be a low profile 8x24 coil count configuration. The spring wire shall be 13 gauge high carbon, double tempered to eliminate permanent load stress on the coil and the assembled unit. The spring unit shall contain no border wires, thereby allowing the mattresses to fold from head to foot and return to a 180 degree flat surface without any damage to the mattress.
Upholstering
The mattress construction shall be an inverted side seam using a lock stitch for the closing end. The seams shall be located half way down the depth of the mattress in order to prevent body fluid absorption into the mattress. There shall be no tape edge seams along any of the perimeter edges of the mattress. Each side of the innerspring unit shall be covered with spun bond insulator. A 1 ¼” thick layer of premium quality 1.25 lb/ft minimum density polyurethane foam shall be placed on each side.
The foam shall contain a minimum ILD range of 32-35 on each side providing the mattress with sufficient firmness.
The innerspring unit shall be encased in minimum 1.5 lb/ft ultra-firm 60 ILD foam for extra edge support. All foam must pass California technical bulletin # 117 flammability standard.
A fire barrier, which must be Integrity30 as manufactured by Ventex, Inc. or equivalent, shall be placed over all the upholstery in such a way that it completely encapsulates the entire mattress forming a full fire barrier. The fire barrier must consist of modacrylic / fiberglass / polyester and shall be a tubular 1 x 1 rib knit with a weight of no less than 6.6 ounces but not greater than 7.3 ounces per linear yard. Fire barriers containing chemical additives or flame retardant additives are unacceptable. Core spun yarns are unacceptable. The ends of the barrier shall be completely closed with SpunGold or fiberglass thread or adhesive.
Adhesives used for assembly shall be water-based, environmentally friendly,
and contain no chemicals listed as carcinogen or potential carcinogen per OSHA and
the National Toxicology Program.
The ends of the mattress shall contain brass vents in such a way as to NOT break
the fire barrier.
Other sizes must be available with components adjusted accordingly.
Flammability Test Requirements
Documentation of conformance to each of these requirements or standards must be submitted with the bid. These required test reports must bear the name of the testing facility or laboratory and bear the name of the bidding company. Failure to provide any of this documentation will result in the rejection of the bid.
1. California Technical Bulletin # 129. The mattress manufacturer must provide written certification from an independent burn test laboratory with the bid that his mattress has been certified to pass Technical Bulletin # 129 full-scale mattress burn test by the State of California of Home Furnishings and Thermal Insulation.
2. ASTM E 1590. The mattress manufacturer must provide the purchaser written certification from an independent burn test laboratory that his mattress releases less than 100 kilowatts under ASTM E 1590.
3. 16 CFR, Part 1633. The mattress manufacturer must provide written certification from an independent burn test laboratory with the bid that his mattress has been certified to pass the new Federal full scale flammability test 16 CFR, Part 1633.
4. California Technical Bulletin # 603. This test is outdated and has been superseded by CFR 1633.
5. Boston Fire Department IX-11 Full composite Burn Test. The mattress manufacturer must provide written certification from an
independent burn test laboratory with the bid that his mattress has been certified in accordance with Boston Fire Department IX-11 Regulatory notice of October 25, 1990 and revised August 19, 1991.
The purchaser requires that copies of these test reports be supplied with the bid, and that when required, failure to provide evidence of compliance with these standards may automatically make the bid non-compliant and invalid.
Warranty
The vendor shall guarantee all the work to perform against defects in materials and workmanship for not less than a prorated period of one year from the date of delivery. A copy of the warranty must be attached to the bid documents.
Other Requirements
All mattresses must be manufactured in the United States of America and must be individually wrapped.
The successful bidder may be required to submit to the owner an additional mattress (at no charge to the Owner) over and above the number called for in this specification. This additional mattress shall be shipped at the same time as all other mattresses. The Owner will pick a mattress at random from the complete shipment for opening and examining purposes. Should the mattress examined not meet the specifications called for, the Contractor shall be responsible for the replacement of the entire order with mattresses that comply with the specifications.
